What Is Cardano (ADA)?

Cardano is a proof-of-stake blockchain platform with the purpose of allowing "innovators, changemakers, and dreamers" to make beneficial changes in the world, according to its website.

The open-source initiative also aspires to "redistribute power from unaccountable systems to the fringes to individuals," contributing to a more safe, transparent, and equitable society.

Cardano was originally founded and is named after Gerolamo Cardano, an Italian polymath from the 16th century. The ADA token name was inspired by Ada Lovelace, a 19th-century mathematician widely recognized as the world's first computer programmer. The ADA token is meant to allow owners to participate in the network's functioning. As a result, ADA holders have the right to vote on any software changes that are suggested.

According to the creators of the layered blockchain, there have already been several compelling use cases for the technology, which aim to make decentralized apps and smart contracts more modular.

Charles Hoskinson revealed the Alonzo hard fork in August 2021, leading Cardano's price to spike by 116 percent in the following month. On September 12, 2021, the Cardano 'Alonzo' hard fork went live, bringing smart contract functionalities to the network. Over a hundred smart contracts were executed only a day after the introduction.

Cardano is used by agricultural businesses to track fresh fruit from farm to fork, while additional solutions built on the platform allow for tamper-proof storage of educational credentials and businesses to battle counterfeit goods.

How Is Cardano's Network Protected?

Cardano is protected by the Ouroboros PoS protocol, which is "environmentally sustainable and verifiably safe."

Ouroboros, according to the project, improves on the security assurances provided by a PoW consensus method while requiring significantly less energy, claiming to be 4 times more energy efficient than Bitcoin.

It's defined as a combination of cutting-edge technology and mathematically proven procedures, with a dash of behavioral psychology and economic philosophy tossed in for good measure. The overall goal of Ouroboros is to achieve long-term, ethical progress.

Participants in the network are awarded for their participation through an incentive system.
